The world is changing so rapidly, teachers have the daunting task of preparing students for the unknown. I believe in teaching the Twenty-First Century Competencies through differentiated instruction, cross–curricular inquiry, and hands on project-based learning. Students must learn to be kind, respectful of diversity, and willing to take responsibility for their actions. I use the Zones of Regulation, Talking Circles, and the Restorative Approach to resolve conflict and build strong relationships — the heart of teaching.
Ms. Frizzle's motto "Take chances, make mistakes, get messy!" has inspired how I teach. Cross–curricular inquiry, hands on project-based learning, and gamification are the closest things to magic in the classroom. Students who are involved in and excited about the direction of their learning become invested and engaged learners. A love of learning is the most important thing for me to teach my students.
The classroom environment should be a safe, welcoming space. You can see the trust that students have in an anonymous vote, which allows students to express opinions they may not feel comfortable expressing in the group environment a classroom is. Creating safety means creating an equitable environment. The visual schedule, the combined class task-board, and alternate seating spaces allow all students choice and supports. To the left, you can see the Relaxation Station, with self-regulation kits and positive affirmations to be a reminder to each student in a time of vulnerability that they are important and loved.
The restorative approach, based in restorative justice, aims to create a culture of respect and inclusion by building, and maintaining, strong relationships.
The goal of restorative circles is to rebuild and restore the relationships that were damaged as a result of a negative action or behaviour, with a focus on context and understanding.
Parents can see our classroom feed and their child's portfolio, or send a direct message to me.
After school I walk my students out and say good-bye. This gives parents an opportunity to have a quick check-in and ask about their child's day, or to ask me questions about upcoming events.
